Dewalt 20V Brushless Compact Drill & Hammer Drill DCD793 & DCD798 drill

These new compact drills feature a brushless motor that puts out a rated 404 unit watts out of power. How much is that in in-lbs of torque? Good question! However unfortunately Dewalt doesn’t provide torque numbers here in the USA as they probably don’t want users to compare torque numbers with competing brands when shopping. Unit Watts Out is a proprietary method of power output that only Dewalt seems to use. This means you can’t directly compare with other brands who use a more traditional in-lbs of torque number.

 

Both new drills are also pretty compact as well. The drill/driver is shown above and it is 6.38 inches in length. This makes it more compact than the DCD777 while also having more Unit watts out. This model is also nearly as compact as the Dewalt 20V Atomic drill at only 0.08 inchs longer yet also having more power output than the Atomic drill.

Both models feature 1,650 max RPM (no-load) in speed two.

Hammer Drill Model

The hammer drill is shown above and is is 6.93 inches in length. That makes it over a half inch shorter than the DCD777 and the DCD777 doesn’t even have a hammer drill mode. If you’re wondering why this model is a bit longer than the DCD793, that’s because of the added length to fit the hammer drilling mechanism.

The hammer drill model features 28,050 BPM in hammer drill mode. Get the hammer drill model if you will occasionally drill into concrete. If you don’t ever plan on hammer drilling, then get the drill/driver version as it will be smaller and cost less.

Both models are compact for their class which means they have the power to do plenty of work and fit into tighter spots than larger drills.

There’s not much to say about the mud mixer, it has the typical workings of a mud mixer. A 1/2″ keyed chuck and two large handles. The battery bay is on top. It looks like a dial is on the right and a trigger on the left trigger. These are good for mixing drywall mud and thinset among other things.

Ryobi 18V 5″ Handheld Tile Saw

The tile saw has 5 inch on the title which may allude to the size of its blade. However the blade looks a bit smaller than 5 inches. It looks more like 3 to 4 inches like those small cut off wheels but I could be wrong. It has a form factor similar to a circular saw with a shoe that can bevel. The upper blade guard holds a water reservoir to water cool the blade as it cuts. Water also helps cut down on airborn dust. It also appears to have an opening at the rear of the blade guard.

Ryobi 18V HP Brushless 5″ Handheld Tile / Masonry Saw

This cordless tile saw now gets a new name/title as the 18V HP brushless 5 inch handheld tile / masonry saw. It is now scheduled to launch September 2023. There are two model numbers for this, the PBLHTS01B as a baretool will be priced at $199. The kit form PBLHTS01K is priced at $259 and comes with a 4ah battery and charger.

 

Features

This cordless handheld tile saw is a portable tile saw that allows you to make cuts on tile and brick just about anywhere. Rather than bringing the tile to the saw, you take the saw to the tile. It has the ability to cut up to 1-5/8″ cut capacity at 90 degrees. It also has a lock on trigger for continuous cuts.

Above we can see a 20.5 oz water reservoir attachment for fully portable wet cutting. We can also see this tile saws ability to make bevel cuts with 0-45 degree bevel cuts.

 

One of the strengths of a portable tile saw over a stationary tile saw is its ability to cut large format tile. Where it just wouldn’t be possible to cut with a typical stationary tile saw table system.

Above we can also see this tile saws included 12 foot water supply hose for unlimited water flow. You can adjust the amount of water flow with the onboard water flow control knob.

Wet cutting is great for cutting tile as it eliminates airborn dust. However water cutting can get messy. There are times when you may want to skip wet cutting and to work on the dust problem, this tile saw also has a vacuum attachment dust port for 1-1/4″ and 1-7/8″ vac hoses. Now this wont entirely get rid of dust but it will help greatly so make sure to use you PPE dust masks.

 

Runtime

As far as runtime is concerned you can cut up to 100 linear feet of 1/4″ tile per charge with a 12ah battery. Ryobi says this is enough to cut all the tile for standard bathroom with just one charge.

Quality – Having a quality light for the job is never a bad thing.  While we haven’t seen the light first hand, we know Bosch doesn’t mess around.  When they make a product, it’s tough and made to last.  So from a toughness standpoint, we have no worries about the build quality.

Brightness – 800 to 1,200 lumens is a great range for a wide variety of applications.  Now I am guessing this light is more in the 5K Kelvin range but not sure. But it would only make sense since getting clear vision is extremely important when painting and especially when dealing with electrical wires.

Size – The light is 8″ tall by 8.5″ wide by 5.5″ long.  With a battery not sure the overall weight.  Will be interesting to see if this is a light you can also use carrying around for drywall and painting work or if it’s geared more towards a set and forget type of approach.

Price – From what I see so far, $99 seems like this might be a good deal.  We know Bosch and the quality, it has a good lumen range and seems like it can be used for a variety of applications.

Wrap It Up

We are going to try and get our paws on one and see first hand about the light.  Our experience with Bosch lights in the past have been positive. They have been tough, price reasonably and ideal for the job site.  At this point, not really sure about the Bluetooth and how much that will be used.  However, I would always rather have more features than less.  Our experience with Bosch apps has always been positive.  In fact, they have some of the cleanest and easiest to use apps out of any power tool manufacturer.

DeWALT Duct Tape

There is an old saying that you only need two things in your toolbox, duct tape and WD-40.  If it doesn’t move and it should use WD-40.  If it moves and shouldn’t, use duct tape.  I am not going to give the History of Duct Tape but it has been used for over 100 years and is used almost everywhere.  Duct tape is used in almost any application from ductwork to spaceflight and everything in between.  In fact, duct tape was used on the Apolo 13 mission to help fix the carbon dioxide filters.  But enough about that, let’s talk about the DeWALT Duct Tape.

The DeWALT Duct Tape is a woven heavy-duty cloth duct tape.  The 17 mil is thick which helps make it extra strong for demanding applications.

One cool feature is the side of the tape has small grooves which makes it extremely easy to tear so you don’t need scissors.

I used to think duct tape was all the same.  However, after my house project where I used duct tape on so many different projects, I realized there is a difference.  DeWALT Duct Tape is one of the best tapes I have used.  First, it peels nicely off the roll.  Second, it’s extremely easy to tear so I never feel like I am fighting to remove the tape.  Third, I like how thick the tape is and lastly, the holding power is awesome and reliable.  But if I want to remove it, it’s not a pain to remove it from my object.

Makita 18V and XGT Cordless Drills Do NOT Have the Same Torque

When I conducted a specs comparison between Makita’s XGT and 18V LXT cordless hammer drill and impact driver combo kit two years ago, I missed something.

In that post, I reported:

Both 18V and XGT drills are said to deliver the same 1,250 in-lbs of max torque.

This is true. Makita USA does advertise both the XPH14 18V hammer drill and GFD01 XGT hammer drill as delivering 1,250 in-lbs max torque.

I also wrote:

The 18V and XGT hammer drills have the same max torque

However, as I recently learned, this does not appear to be true.

Makita 18V vs 40V XGT Brushless Hammer Drill Comparison

It has come to my attention that the two drills deliver different max fastening torque specs.

Power tool brands typically advertise their cordless drills according to max fastening torque, or at least this has been my long-time understanding.

Makita, however, seems to be advertising these two drills using a different “peak torque” measurement.

Here are more detailed torque figures for Makita’s flagship model 18V LXT and XGT cordless hammer drills, according to international brochures and specs tables:

I have seen the 18V LXT model’s max fastening torque listed at a lower value of 125 Nm in some of Makita’s product pages, but for the sake of this post we’ll use the higher value of 130 Nm.

Maximum fastening torque is usually measured using battery-powered drills and rundown adapters that simulate different types of fastening joints.

How is this other “peak” torque metric determined, if not by maximum fastening torque?

Why are both drills advertised here as delivering 1,250 in-lbs of max torque when different values are advertised elsewhere?

Makita Canada, for example, advertises their 18V hammer drill as delivering 1,150 in-lbs (130 Nm) max torque, and their XGT hammer drill as delivering 1,240 in-lbs (140 Nm) max torque. This agrees with specs tables from other international regions where Makita lists these same maximum fastening torque values alongside “peak” torque values of 141 Nm, (1,250 in-lbs).

To sum things up, here in the USA, Makita advertises their flagship 18V and XGT hammer drills as delivering 1,250 in-lbs max torque. But when you look at the more detailed torque specs that Makita advertises in other markets for the equivalent international model drills, the 18V LXT model has a lower max fastening torque than the XGT model.

Advertised torque specs of 1,250 in-lbs for both models suggest comparable if not identical torque capabilities. But outside of Makita USA’s product literature, this is shown to not be true, as the maximum fastening torque values are different.

The XGT drill’s max fastening torque spec (140 Nm/1,240 in-lbs) is very close to its advertised peak torque value (141 Nm/1,250 in-lbs). However, the 18V LXT drill’s max fastening torque spec (130 Nm/1150 in-lbs) is quite a bit off from its advertised peak torque value (141 Nm/1,250 in-lbs).

Bosch’s AMPShare Platform Lets Pros Use One Battery System for All of Their Tools

Many tradesmen utilize different tools and batteries throughout the day, oftentimes from entirely different brands. Carrying that many individual batteries and tools around can take up a lot of room in your toolbox or work truck. The Bosch AMPShare Battery Platform allows Pros to interchangeably use the same batteries across a variety of power tool brands. Let’s go over the goals and compatibility of this ambitious partnership.

 

Bosch AMPShare Battery Platform: Overview

Bosch, along with Fein and Rothenberger, have announced a new partnership in the form of the AMPShare battery platform. In addition to these companies, twelve additional power tool brands are joining the alliance to launch new AMPShare-compatible tools in 2023 and 2024, including:

  • Ledlenser
  • Mato
  • Cox
  • MK
  • Orgapack
  • Signode
  • PerfectPro
  • Steinel
  • Bosch Rexroth Corp.
  • Titan
  • Wagner

By the end of 2023, over 300 new compatible tools are planned to be released that will be compatible with AMPShare, including 32 new 18V Bosch tools. The system itself will span more than 25 individual brands to offer Pros a wide range of applications using just one battery.

The AMPShare battery takes the design of Bosch’s current 18V battery, with updated AMPShare branding that shows its inter-compatibility with other tool brands. The batteries’ Core18V technology delivers the same power and performance that tradesmen expect from Bosch.

Compatibility

As mentioned, the AMPShare batteries will be compatible with a number of power tool brands. Current Bosch Power Tools batteries and AMPShare alliance products are compatible with the AMPShare battery along with future Bosch products launched in 2023 and beyond.

For tradesmen using Fein tools, the AMPShare batteries will be compatible with the MultiMaster 500 and 700 oscillating multi-tools, with more tools to follow throughout 2023 and 2024.

 

Rothenberger’s battery-powered press tools, bending tools, and vacuum pumps will also be compatible with this battery platform starting in 2024.

Bosch AMPShare Battery Platform Availability

Bosch has plans to start rolling out the AMPShare battery platform to retailers and distribution partners in the U.S. and Canada starting in June 2023.
